Yes, there are some babies who manage to nurse effectively and
painlessly even eith a tongue tie. Unfortunately, that's why some
docs want to take the "wait and see" attitude. The problem is that
if if baby can't do well in spite of it, he/she ahs already learned
ineffective tongue action and may take some time to relearn how to
nurse with the "freed up" tongue! Certainly there are some that are
very minimal and often not even discovered until there is a milk
transfer and/or soreness problem, so we aren't saying every frenulum
should be clipped no matter what, but the obvious ones shouldn't be
ingored.
Some people with broken bones heal just fine without casting or
otherwise limiting movement. That doesn't mean anyone should take
an approach of. "We can always put a cast on later if there's a
problem." Noone would suggest waiting to see if an open wound gets
infected before suggesting putting on an anitbiotic ointment.
