Hi All,
I'm coming back from a short LN break (to get ready for my dd's visit and
ensuing baby shower next week) to post this. I have just seen the AAP
statement due to be released next Monday (Oct 10). Rachel, you may need
that flameproof suit, at least we here in the US might. It makes 3 major
recommendations. 1) Place babies on their backs to sleep, not even on their
sides now, which they have been kind of saying for a while now anyway. 2) No
bed-sharing. It recognizes that proximity to parents is important, so
recommends a crib in the parents' room, but babies should be put back into
it before mom falls back to sleep, and 3) pacifier use is recommended,
particularly at nap and bedtime. They state that the evidence that
pacifiers may interfere with breastfeeding "is not compelling enough to
discredit the recommendation. However, it is recommended that pacifier
introduction for breastfed infants be delayed until one month of age to
ensure that breastfeeding is firmly established." They do allow that "if
the infant refuses the pacifier, it should not be forced." The interesting
thing to me is that the statement says not to put it back in the baby's
mouth if it falls out after they drift off. Yey, the closing lines say,

"EDITOR'S NOTE: In a related review article, "Do Pacifiers Reduce
the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome? A Meta-Analysis," found that
several studies show a significant reduced risk of SIDS with pacifier
use, particularly when used during sleep."

Beyond this, they make the usual recommendations regarding not using soft
bedding, don't smoke during pregnancy, no sleeping on other surfaces and so
on. The notice I received says that it is embargoed until the release date,
so I don't know if I can post it here. Someone tell me if I can, and if
not, I'll send a copy if you email and ask for it.

Marsha, in "oh no, here we go again" land, and wondering what impact this
will have on our brand-newly released revised version of our Safe Infant
Sleep brochure in Indiana!
