To the experts in the field,
I have a mother of a 3 month old breastfed baby who was diagnosed a few
weeks ago with biliary atresia and underwent the Kasai procedure. It is
interesting because she never had a real high bilirubin but it just never
got better. At 2 months, her pediatrician said it should be checked out
and thus the diagnosis. Baby fed well, grew well, happy, developmentally
on target, etc. The doctors have told her she must feed one bottle of
Pregestimil a day because the baby needs more medium chain fatty acids than
her breastmilk provides because they are easier to digest. I searched the
archives and found the posts from others being told no breastmilk and I
think we all agree this is inaccurate but can someone explain why
breastmilk would not be the easiest food for this little one to process. I
don't understand how one bottle of pregestimil is going to make any
difference. If there is a reason, is there anything this mom can do to her
breastmilk to be able to exclusively breastfeed her baby. She is willing
to do whatever she can and breastfeed this baby for as long as she can.
She breastfed her last baby for 4 years. The baby is also on Prednisone,
Suprex and Ursidile (that may not be spelled right.
I plan to do a little "Lawrence reading" to try to understand the digestion
of the fatty acids and the content of breastmilk (things I study for tests
but tend to always need refreshing!).
Her doctors are very interested in any articles that could be sent their
way and are willing to let her exclusively breastfeed if they can see
enough research to support it. I know they are the ones that should be
supply the research that she can't but that isn't going to happen so she
(and I) want to be proactive.
Looking forward to seeing your replies.
