i should clarify then, just in case i wasn't clear - these are babies
who are 'permalatched' (or at least offered constantly), who are nursing
very well, who's mothers believe in nursing on cue, even if that's
continuously, even if that's several times an hour around the clock.

And also, i will say that I used to believe that newborns just didn't
get hungry, that colostrum was definitely enough. another
clarification, i've only seen it twice out of many many many many
babies, with other upset babies it seemed obviously linked to forceps or
otherwise an otherwise difficult birth.

It was so clear in these two examples that babies distress revolved
around hunger. In both cases friends were on hand to nurse the hungry
baby - one of those cases mom's milk came in by 24h, so just that one
feeding was enough to get him past his discomfort. In the other case,
one feeding got him through about 60 mins then he was hungry again. An
astute nurse recognized this and brought them an SNS, mom gave him
just about 5-10 mls every per his cues while continuing to nurse
constantly without the SNS through the night. the next am, another
friend brought her a few ounces of breastmilk and she used a few mls of
that here and there through the day (as minimally as possible b/c she
also felt that he should only be getting colostrum). she had a full
supply by sunday night, he was born friday around 1 in the afternoon.

i do understand the resistance to this idea of a baby being hungry as I
was always completely resistant to it as well.
