I have also wondered if there was a way to simulate breastfeeding
with this program. It sounds great in theory. I have heard of
similar programs where the teens are required to carry an egg with
them and keep it from harm. That eliminates the feeding choice, but
doesn't have the feedback. With BTIO the person directing the
program gets a computer readout of how well the "parent" responds to
the "baby's" needs.
As I said, it sounds great in theory. However, on several occasions
I have observed teens with these dolls in public. They plop them
down nearby so they can pop the "feeder" into the mouth quickly
enough, but there is no encouragement for other interaction. The
dolls are treated much like a purse or book bag. The program does
nothing to teach quality parenting, but does make the point that
babies require work and can "get in the way" of the fun things teens
like to do. Maybe it could be redesigned with buttons that need to
be held down for however long the need lasts. For example, if the
doll gave a message saying "change diaper" instead of actually
changing, the holder would press the "diaper" button and have to
keep it pressed to whatever time it would take to change a diaper.
The "feed me" message would need to be answered by holding a "feed"
button down for 10-30 (or whatever) minutes. This would make the
point of the intensity of baby needs without imposing feeding
choice.
Just my ramblings on the subject.
Winnie
