I'm not a childless LC, but my predeccesor at work was. She came into
helping moms breastfeed a long long time ago. She worked as the nursery
manager more than 30 years ago and had a knack for helping moms and babies
with breastfeeding. She was the one person who helped me with breastfeeding
my daughter in the hospital 15 years ago, and she even called me at home a
couple of days later. When the nursery was combined with postpartum about 14
years ago, she shifted to the role of the lone "lactation specialist" in the
hospital. She worked full time - and most days was seen as early as 5:30 am
- she would stay until 4:30 or later most days. She taught a breastfeeding
class, and saw moms in the hospital who were having trouble, who asked for
her, or who had taken her class. She also had moms come back for outpatient
assistance when necessary. She was never married and had no children of her
own. People still ask about her and marvel at her gift. She did get her
IBCLC about 4 years ago, right before she retired at about age 70. She was a
saint I'd say. She's still around, enjoying her retirement -- and I wouldn't
be surprised if she's helping neighbors with breastfeeding!
