I have in my hands a copy of the instructions for insertion (etc.) of a
"Protectaid" sponge.

It says the contraceptive sponge is impregnated with F-5 gel, which
combines the effects of 3 agents exerting a spermicidal activity at low
concentrations: nonoxyl-9, sodium cholate & benzalkonium chloride.

At the very bottom, in the safety warnings (last safety warning) it says
"If you are nursing a baby, consult a physician before using this
product".

At no point does the product say that it should not be used by someone
who is already pregnant. Of course, one would expect that once one
knows one is pregnant, one stops using this type of contraception, as it
doesn't even protect against STD's. However, if it were very dangerous
to a developping embryo (which is much closer to the "source" of the
spermicide than is a nursing child!), one would not use it for
contraception probably unless it claimed to be virtually 100% (it claims
about 90% effectiveness.).

My general rule of thumb is that most things that are not dangerous to
developping foetuses/embryos are not dangerous to nurslings...but I know
there are exceptions. Would someone know if this is one of those
exceptions, and if so, why (which ingredient would probably cover that
question!). If not, is it just a general warning issued "to cover their
butts"...but that one wouldn't really need to pay any attention to?

Thank you!

Fio.
