I have seen several women with torn skin tags on nipples. If I see this
prenatally, I refer to a dermatologist here whom I know well. He just snips
them off. They heal well. He can also do this post-natally if the tag is
tearing. If the nipple is too tender to nurse, mom can use moist wound
healing and topical antibiotic if necessicary. Thin, silicone nipple
shields can protect nipple for a few days while healing, or mom can pump
with hospt. grade (gentle) electric pump, or hand express. There are
probably moms out there with such tags which are not treated and which never
cause a problem. It makes sense that an LC is likely to see the ones which
have gotten torn, perhaps infected, or are causing baby to suck oddly due to
a tickle from the tag.
