I heard Pam Morrison speak on HIV in Africa at the LLLI conference in Chicago in 2001. She mentioned the major sociological impact to be reckoned with when a woman chooses not to breastfeed in the many developing countries of Africa where breastfeeding is the prevailing norm... If a mother gives her baby a bottle, it will be seen as a blatant announcement of her HIV positive status. As a result, both she and her child will be ostracized by her community and family, threatening the lives and health of both mother and child. A death sentence by bottle.
