You are right: probably, the best (more correct) thing to do, is to ask 
to the editor.
If the problem is a technical one, they can solve it for everybody, if 
it is a local problem, they can choose the course of action they think 
more fit, and that will be risk free!

The "full journal" trick does not work for me.
