My understanding is that it is misleading to 'eyeball' a sample of
milk and judge the general adequacy of it to nourish a baby.

Research tells us that samples of milk differr massively in
calorie/cream content anyway - it doesn't matter.

Even if a mother consistently produced milk that was very low in fat
(how would that happen? Fat content varies with the amount of milk in
the breast, as we know) it wouldn't matter - the baby would just take
greater volumes. In fact, this is what happens with over-supply - the
milk ingested is relatively lower in fat and the baby takes large
volumes.

These babies gain weight like billy-oh so they certainly get their calories :)

"By 4 mos, wt started dropping to 5%ile at 7 mos. But his ht grew to
75%ile at the same time."

This is really unusual - this is one *skinny* baby.

There is no 5th percentile line on the charts in general use in the
UK (though of course a 5th percentile does exist!). If the
same/similar charts are being used in the US, then I would wonder if
someone is mis-reading them. Or misweighing. Or mismeasuring length.

So here, I think we'd be looking again at those figures. We would
totally disregard the appearence of the milk.

If the figures are right, then they are justification for looking at
what might be going on medically/developmentally.

If the baby checks out as fine just skinny, then we'd be encouraging
the mother to bf *ad lib* - there's no info in your post about how
often the baby is feeding. And because he's eight months,
calorie-dense solid foods would be entirely appropriate - here,
mothers are advised to give avocado pear, banana, to add a lump of
butter to pasta/rice.
