Spend time watching babies bf. A 3 day old should be swallowing often. The
clicking and slurping and dimpled cheeks are signs of poor latch and usually
mean baby has to take in more breast, if he can. There are many
possibilities. The baby could have a tight frenulum. The mother may have
very poorly graspable nipples. As Kathleen suggested, go back to the basics
which is latch, and even before that positioning. But remember, while you
are figuring it out, have the mother immediatley begin expressing very
frequently and feeding the baby this expressed milk. If the milk supply is
very low, then that is part of the problem and supplementation may have to
be used. The baby could be fed with a supply line if he can latch at all.
Sometimes this doesn't work well and the baby must be fed by spoon, cup,
bottle, whatever. Make sure the baby is getting plenty of milk and recovers.
Was he premature?
