I learned that many MD's do not respect LLL because of misconceptions they
have. So when I have to give a reference, I use the Answer Book to find the
appropriate journal and use the original. I also use the Center for Bfing
Information. If I get a journal reference from the CBI, I will tell the MD, you may not
know but LLLI has the world's largest collection of medical research on
lactation. Whenever a MD says something derogatory about LLL, I try to ask now
where did you get that information and try to explain that LLL's Med Advisory
Board are the world's leading authorities on the areas of pediatrics, nutrition,
family med etc and as a professional I am sure he doesn't want to disrespect
his fellow collegues.
I also will display the Answer Book during inservices, etc and poiint out
that it has all the references at the back of each chapter.I try to show that
this stuff was not just made up--there are professional journals quoted. Find
quotes from their professional organizations in there. It also helps to hand out
LLL MD conference brochures and tell them this is an international
conference they may be interested in attending. They usually will give it a few glances
but it helps place the thought that LLL is more then a bunch of moms sitting
around thinking up ways to disrupt their routines.
Respect and professionalism will usually demand return respect and
professionism.
