Brenda, you can find a comprehensive article discussing the
contraindications to breastfeeding at
http://www.nmchc.org/html/FullText.htm. Scroll down the page and click on
the article "A Review of the Medical Benefits and Contraindications to
Breastfeeding in the United States." This is "a technical information
bulletin that was prepared by Ruth Lawrence, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics,
Obstetrics, and Gynecology, University of Rochester Medical Center. It
presents current information on the medical benefits of and
contraindications to breastfeeding. Although breastfeeding is ideal for
infants' optimal growth, development, and emotional well-being, it is
important for health care professionals to be aware of those rare situations
in which mothers should be counseled not to breastfeed." Herpes viruses are
discussed on pp 17 - 19 of this document.
