Murphy's Law states "If anything can go wrong, it will."

There really was a Murphy. In the early days of the US space program, a
rocket sled was used to test the affects of sudden acceleration and
deceleration on the human body. Air Force Capt. John Murphy was responsible
for attaching biomedical sensors/monitors to the first human volunteer, an
AF Major who was also a physician. The sensor leads could be attached in two
ways - the right way, and the wrong way. Finally, all the preparation was
done and the experiment was run. The rocket sled with the volunteer securely
strapped in went screaming down the rails until the water brakes brought it
to an abrupt stop. Eagerly, the scientists examined the test instruments and
found - nothing. You guessed it - all the leads had been attached the wrong
way. Capt. Murphy bravely wrote up the results. His report was photocopied
and circulated widely, both overtly and covertly. Eventually the core
message found its way into our language as "Murphy's Law."
