Greetings All..........I met a woman today who has a 5 month old baby who was
born without the valve that connects the heart to the lungs. The baby has
had two previous surgeries to hopefully correct the problem up to this point.
The baby is now almost 20 lbs and thriving. The mom has pumped since birth,
and her baby has never been at the breast. She is now pumping about 3 times
a day and growing very weary of pumping. She has used donor milk (advised by
her ped!) and also supplements with formula. The baby has had digestive
problems and they have tried to use as little formula as possible. At each
feeding, she now mixes 2 oz EBM, 2 oz donor milk and 2 oz formula.

Presently, the mom is ready to quite pumping, the donor milk supply is being
depleted and her freezer store is being depleted too. Her question to me
was, would it be better to keep using the breast milk at the rate she is now,
where her supply will be depleted in about one month, and her baby will be 6
mo old and completely on formula. OR, should she scale back on the number of
ounces of breast milk he gets per day and stretch it out closer to a year, so
that he gets some breast milk everyday? Interesting question, what is YOUR
thought? I told her I would share each reply with her, with each writer's
permission. Thanks!
