I believe that a teaching sheet for hospital staff should address issues as
if those issues were international.
Dear Friends:
Valerie makes an important point. When I was applauding the effort to
make an educational form for non-maternity hospital staff (for those mothers that
go to the emergency room or end up in orthopedics or in intensive care), I
didn't specify that I was thinking about hospitals in the USA.
I was thinking about how many mothers (on maternity units also) have
their babies kept from them and are prohibited from breastfeeding because the
mother has fever, or some infectious disease. Lawrence and the AAP Red Book are
resources that say mothers can breastfeed with mastitis, upper respiratory
infection, urinary tract infection, hepatitis (A, B, and C) and other infectious
diseases. At present, in the USA, HIV+ is a contraindication.
    warmly,
