Kim, ITOTALLYunderstand your frustration...I was in the same situation
about 5 years ago....HANG IN THERE!!!!!! There are going to be people who
don't get it no matter where you go. You at this time have the advantage
of your coworkers who know and do get it. Focus on doing your job with
excellence, try to avoid one on one conflicts (do group ed even when you
know it is just a few people who really need it) and make a big deal out
of the positive situations that occur. The most important thing you can do
is focus on customer satisfaction...encourage those patients with good OR
bad experiences to make their comments in writing via your own system. The
thought you must always go back to is that no matter what "they" think
about you or your job or breastfeeding in general....YOU know YOU ARE
RIGHT!!! BREASTFEEDING IS BEST!!! Look to your supportive co-workers when
you are on the verge....we need support in these situations to keep going
just as our clients do to keep BF under adverse situations. It takes
time...our department has really come around....we have far fewer
'dropouts' and most of the real problem staff has left!!!! They don't like
being complained about by educated patients!!! One thing you might
try...don't try to correct ALL the problems at once...focus on one thing at
a time...make a list of problems as you see it , a list of likely solutions
and prioritize. Nearly 100% of our BF babies get to BF within 1
hour....was NOT the norm 5 years ago. Still haven't gotten rid of ABM bags
but some MD's and PNP's forbid for their pts. Some nurse's take fma out of
bags and stress disadv's of same. I'd be glad to talk to you about this in
greater detail one on one if you like....Good Luck!!!
