This is something that happened to me last spring. The baby had a not-so-
obvious tongue tie, humped up in the back, but no creasing on the tip, not
able to fully extend, unable to curl, and not transferring milk
efficiently despite lots of jaw movements, trembling, and crying in
frustration. These types of babies usually have trouble bottle feeding too
and this one was dribbling milk all over her chin. I asked the mom to
stick out her tongue and she had the exact same tongue and was not able to
fully extend it. The mom finally agreed to take baby to the ENT who took
one glance at the tongue and said no tongue tie. I looked like a complete
idiot! We worked on tongue walking and the mom kept up her supply with a
Symphony. Finally, after the baby was about a month old, the mother
called to tell me that they were solely breastfeeding. She said one day,
the baby just breastfed (the mom had been trying off and on). What the
heck was that all about? I didn't question it because the mom was so
happy about it. I'm wondering if tongue-ties can ever fix themselves or
if babies just figure out a way to breastfeed despite the tongue tie.
