I Have been asked by Marie Courdent , the APL for LLLFrance to post the two
following questions in order to help mothers over here.
The first mother is due to deliver in June of her first baby. She had PKU as a
baby. She was on a low phenylalanin diet as a child and has resumed that diet
before conception and during pregnancy . She wants to breastfeed but would like
to know of similar cases. what she wants to clarify is if the composition of
her milk regarding proteins or amino acids can be affected . Is there a need to
continue the diet during lactation . Any references and/or case stories would be
welcome .
The second question is about a mother who has a 6 year old with a congenital
deficiency in IgA; IgG2 and IgG4. The little girl is under close medical
supervision with lots of specialists involved (which the mother resents ,she
perceives her child is treated only as a " rare case" ). Fourteen months ago
the mother had another baby ,breastfed , and expressed milk which she gave to
the little girl three times a day (120g everyday) She did that for three months
during which the child's IgA count increased . When she told the doctors about
the breastmilk , this was dismissed as coincidental . Doctors in France don't
believe much in breastmilk but paradoxically it is very easy to obtain an
electric pump or lyophilised breastmilk paid for by the Social Security system
on prescription . Would you have any references and/or experiences that could
help this mother talk with her doctors.
We already have the article published in JHL : "Banked human milk in the
treatment of IgA deficiency and allergy symptoms in 1990" but would need more .
Thank you
Gisele Laviolle Paris France
