So I've done some of my own diluting--50/50 sterile water and the 1%
Gentian Violet that I get at the pharmacy.

Before this, I had been having moms paint their nipples and areola with the
1% solution and baby got it diluted with her breastmilk. I've decided that
if I am going to have the mother do any applying directly to baby's mouth
it will be diluted with equal parts sterile water.

By the way I have some results on my trial of parents rinsing their mouths
with water in which they had swished a q-tip dipped in 1% GV, and then
swallowing. The first family, who had begun the treatment very early,
found that within 2 days their oral thrush was resolved ( Dad did it too).
They continued for the 3rd day. The sore nipples were gone within a day,
but mom continued for another 2 days with GV on her nipples. Of course,
they were restricting their diets and taking acidophilus.

With the second case, mom felt that the GV caused her to have abdominal
pain, so I advised her to stop the oral treatment after one day. Her
nipple pain was resolved within a day, but she continued for another day.
Baby's "glossy lips" and other signs of oral thrush were gone within 2
days. She has, since, concluded that the abdominal pain is most likely from
another source.

I am going to exercise caution in suggesting the oral treatments, and I'll
let you know if I have further experiences. It makes sense to me that if
GV can resolve baby's oral thrush and systemic overgrowth, it could do the
same for her mother. I suggested it to these two families because of their
reluctance to taking Diflucan. They felt more favorable toward GV because
their families had both used it in the past.
