I had one of my WIC families with 9 month identical twins in the other day.
One twin breastfeeds and loves it, the other one nursed at first but 2
months ago self weaned. Mom has not had access to an effective pump, and
really seems overwhelmed the thought of pumping....so just one twin gets
breast..mom still offers to the other one and is hoping he'll start nursing
again. (the one not breastfeeding thumbsucks and mom thinks this is the
reason she can't get him to take it again)

Even the breastfed infant gets a fair amount of formula (Mom is working full
time)

The infant who gets the breastmilk hasn't been sick once. The one who
stopped two months ago has been sick constantly since weaning, and was even
hospitilized for a virus last month. (Boy isn't Mom convinced of the
benefits of breastfeeding!)

We have here...geneticially identical individuals exposed to the same germs,
and only the one not getting any breastmilk is getting sick.

I've always believed even breastfeeding once a day can make a big difference
in the health of infants. When my son was a toddler, he spent the last six
months nursing only once a day...and never got sick until 2 weeks after he
weaned.
