Gretchen, I don't think I exactly agree with you. IMO, the more medical
POINT OF VIEW parents have, the more they want rules, which do indeed work
contrary to the bf relationship. But the more INFORMATION they have about
what bf is and how it works, the better they build their own intuition and
the more confident they can be in it.

Elisheva,

I think I'd better not do any more posts at 3 am...What I was trying to
delicately insinuate was that many (parent) people from the health care field
are reluctant to loosen the grip on the quantitative aspects - measurements
and times etc - and trust their intuitive skills - the art part of
breastfeeding. I completely agree with you about giving parents all the
information they want so that they are more fully capable of making informed
choices. That isn't an option without sufficient information.
Making them aware that many babies do not read the same book of rules
sometimes gently points out that we need to perhaps have parents try to see
life from the baby's perspective. This kind of a shift in the point of view
can be very helpful and quite a good tool for parents more inclined to impose
rules arbitrarily if they can see from the baby's eyes.
