I'm glad we are talking about this. Thank you for providing Cathy's email. I sent her my thoughts. As an RD I am comfortable with the model of test once then recertify by education hours. Aside from the fact that I think CERP's are a better representation of education and provide more opportunities to learn new info than retaking an ENTRANCE exam over and over again, I don't like how much is riding on the events of 1 particular day. I really don’t mind taking the exam. I do not have test anxiety. I don’t mind the new computer format. I made the same respectably high grade both times I’ve taken it. However, relying on the exam to keep my certification is a little risky and stress inducing. If I had not passed the exam in July of 2013 would I have been out of a job come October? The last Monday in July is the worng day to have a bad day! And what if something terrible had happened on my way to the testing center to either me or someone in my family and I didn’t make the test? I’d rather hold my fate in the reliability, accountability and flexibility of CERP’s. The anxiety of those 3 months (which is a whole different rant) even though I knew I had passed was ridiculous. Maybe by 2023 we will have this sorted out. If not, I won’t be 70 until I’ve taken the exam at least 3 more times. That will be 5 total before I retire. I encourage you to get involved in the discussion. Things are always changing!
Thanks, Mandy Schaub, MS, RD, IBCLC
