I know of a birthing center which calls the first hour after birth the 4th
stage of labor and keeps the mother in the birthing room for rest,
breastfeeding, and waits for all the baby tests, eye stuff, etc until this
hour is up. It is all considered part of the birth, not part of the
postpartum period. It works there, in NY where lots of regulations by the
state exist, but this gets around them.

PS In my last post I wrote ' l0 ADH' , it was supposed to be the ADH is
l0X normal in the first few days. Anyway, right now I cannot recall where
I read that. But basically it says that babies have enough fluid on board
for the first few days. Wt loss may result also from the drying of soggy
little bodies who have living in fluid and are now adjusting to a dry
environment.
