Dear Lactnetters,

Help! Mom is committed breastfeeder. Had a difficult time. mastitis x2
by 4 weeks (solved that by better bras?). Baby nursing for loonnngg
periods of time (45 min - 1 hr.). Got mom to shorten that by watching
for non-nutritive sucking, offering finger for comfort. Mom might have
gone a little overboard on this, not sure. At approx. 7 wks., baby
started to nurse every 1-1.5 hrs. 2 days later mom started mini-pill (we
had discussed that this might cause milk supply to drop, but it was
method she was comfortable with). 8 days later, baby was still nursing
every 1-1.5 hrs. Mom tired, frustrated. Pumping, but getting 1.5 oz.
total. Mom started fenugreek 2 tablets 3x/day. Milk supply was up in 2
days, baby nursing 2-2.5 hrs. in 24 hr. period. Pumping 2 oz. from 1
breast. Mom finally informed me that baby kept falling asleep at breast
and she had difficult time rousing him. Did observe feed. Baby nursed
short time on one side, wanted to switch, had mom offer other breast.
Then after short nurse baby went back to 1st breast and finished. Baby
did 5 hr. stretch (at night) after this method. Baby also very gassy
during nursing and needs to be burped frequently.

So, I have a few questions. (1) how long can mom stay on fenugreek and
will effectiveness peak; (2) is this the result of the mini-pill; (3)
could baby's sleepiness and/or gassiness be result of mini-pill?

Please post to list or privately. TIA for any help
