I have found that the OB who attends the delivery never wants to consider
retained placenta, because it makes it appear that she/he didn't examine
the placenta carefully enough.  It looks like a judgement.

...therefore, I agree a second opinion with the goal of checking for
retained placenta would be advisable. Don't hold your breath until you find
a bf friendly gyn.  Even an "unfriendly" one could check for retained
placenta.

Of course, retained placenta usually negatively affects the milk supply, so
it might not be that.

I had a client who, I thought, had symptoms of retained placenta, but the
OB disavowed it.  Finally she ordered a D&C and sure enough there it was.
This was discovered weeks after mom had stopped breastfeeding due to low
supply and heavy bleeding that was tiring her. What was interesting was
that the doctor did tell her that she found the placental fragment.  At
least she had some integrity, and, hopefully, new-found knowledge.
