Ruth writes:
“I just received an invitation to a book launching
next week in Toronto. The book is written by a new
mother who is also PHD. She is writing from the
perspective of all the toxic chemicals in our midst
but specifically how this affects pregnancy, the
foetus and of course breastfeeding. I am sure the
media will have a field day with this information and
will sensationalize the information about breastmilk.”

Ruth, I wonder if this is Sandra Steingraber’s new
book, Having Faith: An Ecologist’s Journey to
Motherhood. I won’t have time to read it myself until
after January but I “have faith” the book is most
respectful of mothers, children, and the breastfeeding
relationship.

You may know Sandra from the pages of Lactnet, though
I think she’s no mail right now. She is quite the
advocate for breastfeeding and is currently tandem
nursing. I suspect she is more interested in cleaning
up the mother’s environment than in discouraging
breastfeeding. Sandra is breathtaking in the public
stance she takes in the scientific community.

Please let me know if the book is a different title!
(If so, I’ll join you in your concern.) If not, I’m
curious to know how the book is promoted. After all,
many more will see the promo than will read the book.
Reminiscent of breastfeeding studies reported under
unfortunate headlines. As we’ve all seen, the media
sometimes even has a field day with the “good news”
about breastfeeding!
