Why is there a need to give out any kind of gift pack?  The precious
new baby should be "gift" enough shouldn't it?  Of course the main
reason is to compete with the advertising sample(s) from formula
manufacturers as well as the manufacturers of other baby products.
Our moms get several pre-packaged  bags of ads, samples of things
like baby lotion, wipes etc.  I don't have as much problem with
these as with the formula as these aren't trying to replace
something so important to baby as mother's milk.  On the other hand,
it does seem to imply that all the potions etc. are necessary to
have a helathy baby.
I know other hospitals in addition to ours usually give moms
something like a baby t-shirt or a bag that can be a diaper bag,
purse-type bag or book bag that contains mom's personal care stuff
she'll need postpartum.  I don't really have a problem with these as
they are or contain something that is definitely useful and gives
the delivering hospital  some publicity.  But again, the whole
mentality that hospitals have to give something or that moms should
expect some kind of  "gift" is an unfortunate current attitude.
