Hi Sue,
I do not see any reason to give solids *IF* the baby is NOT showing the
readiness cues. But if baby is showing the readiness cues (developmentally
and interest in) then mom could try another food. It doesn't have to be a
prepared food like infant cereal or jarred foods, it can be from the family
table. I would advise that she avoid the high allergenic foods like egg,
nuts, wheat, etc.  Infants start to need iron *around* the 6 months mark,
however many do fine until much later on a diet of breastmilk alone. I
actually worry more about normal development opportunities for babies to
learn to eat, when babies are showing the developmental readiness.
