I think the idea that a mother needs to wean her baby so that she can heal from an injury must come from someone who knows very little about breastfeeding! Perhaps this mom could explain to her doctor that it is very important to her to continue breastfeeding, and that to quit because of the injury would only compound her losses from the unfortunate accident, and increase her emotional stress during healing time. I can speak from experience, regarding the stress that can come to a mother who bottle feeds formula, when she wants to be breastfeeding.

I had shoulder surgery when Joseph was six months old. It was no trouble to nurse on the surgery side, as long as I had sufficient pillows to support him at the breast. I could relax better, and my shoulder often hurt less while I was nursing than when I wasn't. It would have been more difficult to sit and hold a bottle.

I hope this mom will stick to her guns and keep nursing. I would think that she could eventually relactate the other breast, after the injury heals.
