Hi Ann,
Remember your empathy skills. You can agree with the mom that becoming
a mother is hard, that having twins is murder, that breastfeeding can
have a steep learning curve. Then you can tell her that the problems
are temporary, and that milk supply increases best in the early weeks,
and that if she can just put in a week or two of effort now it can pay
off for the rest of her breastfeeding time. You can also tell her you
will give her some time to think about it all, or if she's sure she's
gonna quit, encourage her to quit for today and reassess tomorrow once
she's had some rest. Most of all, we have to let go of other people's
choices. The choice is hers to make, there is no one "right" thing you
can say to restore her resources or confidence or readjust her
priorities. That can be hard some days, but it is necessary for us to
remain sane.
