Dear Beth, I want to clarify why we don't do personal problems/concerns on
this chat list. Besides the reasons the list mothers have given, I would
like to point out that IBCLCs as "professionals" must do a complete
breastfeeding history on mothers and babies before beginning to work with
them. To just answer questions "off the cuff" would not be doing the mother
a favor nor is it necessarily ethical for IBCLCs to do so. When an IBCLC
helps a mom, even for a short phone conversation, she becomes responsible
for the information the mother is getting, and needs to make a report to the
HCP. Yet, without written permission to send such a report, and the name of
the physician, the IBCLC's hands are tied. Therefore, to answer your very
long post and several questions, an IBCLC would need to ask many questions
back to you in order to get the entire picture of you and your baby's
nursing history. Email is a horrible way to do this. I myself will not do
consultations by email because it is almost impossible to get enough
information that way. I also have to limit the amount of time I can give
someone "for free" this way because 1) I need to make a living and 2) I am
busy enough as it is, with family and work. I sincerely hope you can find
the help you are seeking.
Warmly, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
