Hi all, Coach Smith here again.

I strenuously object to the attacks and innuendos aimed at Donor Milk Banks.
The donor banks in the US are an important part of the SOLUTION to overuse
of manufactured formula, NOT part of the problem. In countries such as
Brazil, donor human milk banks are an important component of the
Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and have contributed significantly to the
BFHI's success. The more pasteurized human milk available, the better - and
the less formula is needed for those few babies whose mothers can't, won't,
shouldn't, or don't provide their own milk to their infants.

I have reason to believe that "research milk banks" also exist, outside the
HMBANA system, to collect human milk for the specific and sole purpose of
research. I also think these banks may pay mothers for their milk. One
reason for my belief is that in the early 90's when my daughter was nursing
her baby, one of my colleagues knew of a researcher at Ohio State University
who was studying human milk lactoferrin. My colleague asked my daughter if
she was interested in donating milk for this research. My daughter didn't
participate, and I didn't follow up any further. OSU is a major
dairy-science research university; I've learned a lot about human lactation
from an OSU Dairy Science professor who has spoken at several lactation
conferences including ILCA in 1996. Except for the glimpse into this issue
when my daughter was nursing, I do NOT have any specific knowledge of
research banks, nor have I taken the time to confirm or refute their
existence and functions.

It is in our best interest as LCs and BF advocates to study the process of
human lactation in depth, if for no other reason than to counter
misinformation coming from Industries that know full well how human breasts
work, because they employ very smart dairy scientists who get PhDs in this
field.
