Dear Kathleen,

I can only give anecdotal evidence but as a mom who had cyclical plugged
ducts (at least once a week) and who has 2 sisters who have both had the same
problem, and as a LLLL for 5 years I can tell you that some women are just
prone to them. However, with DD #3 for me and DS#2 for my sister both of us found
that large doses of vitamin C (1000 mg) were very affective. This was
suggested to both of us by different LCs in different parts of the country. I
honestly have no idea why it works (would love to hear any ideas) but I do know
that it seems to help. Also I've found in my LLLL work that in most women the
plugged ducts seem to either fully resolve or become much less frequent when
the baby is between 6-8 months. I am not sure if this is because the mom
becomes more efficient at detection and resolves the plug before it becomes a
problem or if the baby hits a size that her suck is more efficient and is able to
pull the plugs right out. (again any ideas welcome)

I'm not sure if this helps. I guess I'm just trying to reassure the mom that
you are working with that she is not doing anything wrong, sometimes these
things just happen.

As an aside, my grandmother BF 8 kids and didn't bother wearing a bra for 18
years (her BF career) and she also got plugged ducts.

Peace,

Maggie Payne
