I am feeling very frustrated at work because it seems we are giving formula
left and right and for no good reason. I saw a Mom today whose baby had
been breastfeeding well and frequently and then twice during the night was
given formula and now is having problems. This is a Mom who is at risk
because of a previous breastfeeding failure. When I went out to the nurses
station and ranted about it the day nurse said, "Well, she gave it with
syringe and the Mom wanted to sleep, why is that a problem?" The next room
I went into had a bottle of formula in the trash, so I asked Mom about it
and she said the nurse put it on her nipple to try to get the baby to latch
on (it didn't work- duh! Has that nurse ever tasted that nasty stuff?)

Now mind you, this is the hospital where, when I brought up the idea of
trying to be Baby Friendly was told "We're baby-friendly enough."

What I would like is some quick facts about the reasons you shouldn't give
formula, that even a little in a syringe if not medically necessary is a bad
idea. Facts that will mean something to these formula brainwashed people.
The one I thought of today is how it can mess up the colonization of the
gut. A few more would be great and they need to be well researched so they
don't dismiss me as the zealot I am (and proud of it too).

TIA

Andrea
