A mother I know has a 22 month old with a history of diaper rash, diarrhea,
and some blood in the stool early in life (first weeks) which seemed to be
eliminated by eliminating certain foods in her diet including dairy products,
wheat. He subsisted quite a long time on breastmilk alone as he seemed
sensitive to her reintroducing these foods in her diet and in his as well.

Now that this boy is 22 two months old she has been eating more of these
foods herself and thought that he was tolerating them well in her breastmilk.
She offered him some cheese once recently. She called me today and
reported that he acts distressed then starts to urinate, the first of the
void looking like frank blood and then changing over to normal looking urine.
Lab reports show lots of RBCs in the urine, no WBCs. No fever, everything
else unremarkable. They are going to do some procedures to rule out
anatomical variations but the mother strongly suspects it may be related to
resumption of dairy in her diet. She has eliminated dairy again and will
watch for changes, then reintroduce. Has anyone had anyone who has
experienced similar difficulties? I know that food allergy has been
implicated in bed-wetting but hadn't heard of blood in the urine as a
reaction to foods.
