My sister in law had her baby on April 16. Baby latched on minutes after
birth and nursed many times that first day. things were great. The next day
baby was very sleepy and wouldn't latch on. After many hours baby had no urine
output and they found the baby to have a bacterial infection and was put on a
monitor, feeding tube, etc. Baby stayed in NICU for 10 days!

Mom wasn't allowed to breastfeed for 3 days. When she was finally able to
baby would not nurse at breast. bottles of EBM were given.

Mom has used a foley cup, eye dropper, finger feeding all to no avail. She
is using a bottle with a very slow flow nipple. She trys everyday to get baby
to the breast and baby screams and arches her back.

It is now 6 weeks and mom went back to work this week. 3 days a week for the
next month and then back to full time. I was hoping to get baby back to the
breast well before her return to work but don't know what else to do.

Do you think using a nipple shield in her case would be adviseable. We
haven't tried that and with the babys aversion to the breast, maybe it would be
more like the bottle to her with the shield, and then she can slowly wean the
baby from the shield.

Mom has been pumping exclusively and seems to now be content with this,
however, going back to work and exculsively pumping is going to eventually have a
toll on her milk supply. right now baby is doing great and mom is pumping
very well.

Baby was born at 6lb 9 oz and is now close to 9 lbs.

Any other suggestions out their. Sorry this is so long
