Dear Lactnetters-
Thanks for the new Pediatrics reference for the article on pacifier use.
I accessed the article yesterday, and found it very interesting.
What surprises me about pacifiers is that their use is such an emotional
issue! After ten years in private practice, I just set up a lactation
support program at a local hospital. The pacifier quesstion came up at my
first in-service for the nursing staff. The nurses used language like "I
believe in them" and "I don't like them". I discussed some of the
literature related to pacifier use, especially focusing on pacifier use in
those early days of life, yada yada yada. Bottom line is that the ones who
don't like pacifiers feel bouyed up, and the ones who believe in them
disregard all evidence in conflict with their faith.
When the practices are grounded in passion, reason and information don't
seem to have much liklihood of changing behavior. How do we make changes?
On the plus side, one of the LCs is now teaching the prenatal
breastfeeding class. If we can educate the moms ahead of time... (Not that
their attitudes about pacifiers won't be deeply rooted...)
I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on changing staff attitudes.
