Kathy,
Go to Tom Hale's web site, then look up the radioactive meds. He has a great
chart to look at and then some references. His web site is:
www.perinatalpub.com

The nuclear med doctor was not correct in telling her she cannot breastfeed
again. I don't undrestand where he got this?! To be safe she can have her
milk tested and when the levels are low enough, resume breastfeeding.
What is really sad is that there are other approaches that could have been
taken on this case. I worked with a mom who was Dx and went through surg
during her preg for thyroid cancer. Because she wanted to breastfeed for as
long as possible pp. her endocrinologist followed her thyroid by ultrasound.
Tom told me that the gold isotope for test dose was safer and mom would only
have to pump & dump maybe 24 hours.
If this mom needs obliteration of the remaining thyroid tissue this can only
be done with I-131 and at that point she would need to be weaned because this
drug concentrates in the lactating breast tissue and clearing time from her
body could be months.
Good luck.
