Alicia,
You mentioned "she stopped warm compresses".  The warmth may have been
exacerbating the edema that is usually the most problematic component of
engorgement.  You might advise her to try ice packs and nsaids*.

*(Non-steroidal anti inflamatory drugs for the non-medical folks, stuff like
aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, NOT acetaminophen (tylenol)).
