Hi all,

I am working with a woman who has dientamoeba fragilis. This is a parasite that she has contracted as well as her 3 year old son. He is breastfed - and breastfeeds often. I am wondering about the link between passing this parasite and breastfeeding. They are currently both being treated, after over a year of trying to diagnose what this boy's problem was. His symptoms were excessive diarrhea and vomiting frequently, inability to digest many foods, and irritability. We are just trying to determine if the mom passed this to the baby through her breastmilk or vice-versa. The moms intends to continue breastfeeding until the child naturally weans. It is important to also say that the child weighs only 25 pounds. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Susan Esserman, LCSW, IBCLC
