It is helpful to look at the use of a nursing supplementer in three different phases. Initially, for example for a Baby who has not gained enough the priority is to get as much milk into the Baby as possible - and all this at the breast. Thus, a fast flow Speed makes sense and in this case it might be possible that the Baby Transfers less directly from the breast. However, according to my experience the Baby usually Transfers more, because he/she is sucking longer and more intensively with the added flow.

Later in the second Phase when at-breast Supplementation became easy it is important to Change gears and Change the flow Speed (which also means the required negative pressure to get milk from the device). If the mother changes the flow Speed the Baby will not Transfer less milk directly from the breast. It is easiest to Change the flow Speed with the SNS. How to do this and the three phases are described in the booklet "Parent-Info: Breastfeeding with the Supplementary Nursing System" (available online).

Obviously in the weaning Phase it is important to breastfeed first without the tubing and afterwards the flow Speed Needs to be low.
