Hi all,

I am new to the group. Studying for the IBCLC exam this July. I am a
certified pediatric nurse and work both pediatrics and maternity. On this
post, you had mentioned mixing formula/breastmilk. I always recommend that
they not mix them together in one bottle for a feed. Is mixing indicated or
not? Thanks! So far, reading the posts here have been very educational.

Subject: formula prescription

Dear Lactnet Friends:

In the California FitWIC Baby Behaviors program, this topic is discussed
with the recommendation that the dose, frequency and duration of the
formula supplementation be specific. Otherwise, mothers doubt they can
return to exclusive breastfeeding.

I've seen this in mothers coming home after their baby is discharged from
the intensive care nursery, still mixing their milk half and half with
formula. They are afraid to stop, and they end up weaning. A specific plan
would reduce this happening. The goal of the physician should be to get the
mom back to exclusive breastfeeding; it's in all their organizations'
policy statements.

warmly,
