Denise,
I agree, this case would be an excellent case to publish with regards
breastfeeding and post-partum hemmorage. However, I also think that it would
be extremely useful as one of a case series of breastfeeding/maintaining
lactation in ICUs (including the photo!). I think that there are likely many
situations where the mother/family would wish for breastfeeding/lactation to
be factored into care in intensive care but hospitals and HCPs may not be
aware that it is possible or why it might be desirable. Obviously in this
case the care of the family, ICU staff and LC allowed this mum to breastfeed
her child however, I could also envisage that in situations where the mother
did not survive the fact that breastfeeding happened could be quite
significant to family members and eventually to the child. During a crisis
such as when a new mother is fighting for her life are not easy times for
families to try to explain to staff members just why it might be desirable
for breastfeeding should be factored into care and a case series that does
just this would be extremely useful to LCs asked to be involved in such a
situation.
I wonder if there are some other cases that Lactnet members know of? Could
there be a collaboration?
