OOohh Becky, I have had a that exact same experience using the ameda kit
with the classic as you mentioned. Just prior to leaving my job as a
hospital LC, I had a Mom with extremely damaged nipples admitted with an
abscess for IV antibiotics and I gave her the ameda kit to use. We had just
switched to Ameda from Medela and I think this was one of my first
experiences with the Ameda kit. A few hours later I got a page from her nurse
saying that pumping was agony. She was pumping on my arrival and I noticed
that her nipples seemed to be sucked much too vigorously into the flange,
again on MINIMUM, I told her to stop and went on to search the hospital for
an old Medela kit, which fortunatley I found. Unfortunately the Mom went on
to complain about me to my fellow LCs up to the DON (!), stating that I
damaged her nipples further by instructing her to pump and not staying to
assist her. NOONE believed at the time that this was a result of a pump
problem, as it was explained to us that the pump kits were interchangeable. I
did contact a Medela rep several months later and my suspicions were
confirmed, exactly as you described.
