Our policy at the hospital is not to feed anything for at least 24
hours. We encourage frequent skin to skin, attempting to feed, watching
for cues. We initiate pumping then by 24 hours. Any colostrum obtained
is cup fed or syringe fed. Thereafter, SNS is offered at breast with
breast milk or formula in small amounts every 3 hours until baby latches
on and eats.We have not seen a problem waiting 24 hours. Last year at a
seminar with Dr. L. Gardner speaking, he felt that babies could go even
longer than 24 hours. I believe he said 36 hours. My response to a
physician who wanted babies fed before 8 hours was that he & I have
about enough grey hairs to remember that 30 years ago, all babies in our
area were kept NPO(nothing by mouth) for the first 24 hours without
problems.Perhaps Dr. Newman could add more information on this topic.
