Hi, Nikki: I also share your concern about trhe safety of wet nursing
practices and I did ask the mom who was donating milk what the adoptive
mom's ped had to say about this practice as well as the comfort level of
the mom receiving the donated milk. She said that apparently the ped felt
that benefits to the adopted baby were outweighing the risks and the
adoptive mom had said that she felt comfortable because all the donor moms
had just had babies themselves and all had just had recent bloodwork done,
so she felt they were "clean".
I think the emotional state of the adoptive mom needs to be considered
also. One can only imagine the thought processes of this mother to be told
her baby could die because he wasn't able to tolerate ANY milk but human.
I'm sure I would be doing exactly what this mom has done to ensure the
survival of her baby.
It's just too bad there is no system in place to address this not uncommon
issue in safety.
