I am a La Leche League Italia leader with special responsibility for medical
problems in breastfeeding situations. Another leader has contacted me about
a one month old baby which has had three apnea episodes where the baby has
stopped breathing and turned blue. One of these occurred during a feed and
one two hours after a feed, the other I don’t know about. The baby has had
hospital tests and heart problems have been ruled out. The hospital have
said the attacks may be linked to problems with the valve at the top of the
stomach, and have told the mother not to feed the baby more often than
three hourly. Can anyone tell me more about such attacks and also whether
the advice to limit feeds to a three hourly schedule is helpful? I have
tried searching Lactnet archives but only came up with apnea relating to
sleep, which this is not. Thank you for your help.
