Wise ones: I have a nagging memory about reading something on prolonged or
excessive IV fluids during birth as being a contributing factor in a)
larger-than-expected birth weight babies; b) excessive weight loss in baby
and prolonged regaining of birth weight; c) both a and b occurring.

Does anyone have a link or reference they can share about this?

A bit of back ground on this dyad:

Mother had significant edema post birth after 9 hours on IV fluids…pitocin,
epidural, and 3.5 hours of pushing.

No breastfeed post birth…mother held baby ˝ hour after birth, but no latch
occurred.

Baby was 10 ˝ pounds at birth and rapidly lost more than 10%. Current
weight is approximately 9# 3oz.

LII didn’t occur until day 6. Mom does not feel let downs, but has observed
leaking during let down and fullness.

Midwives suggested supplementing – some contradiction between the two
primary midwives – breastfeeding management pattern has not be consistent –
supplements offered by cup or/and by bottle (mother herself noticed that the
bottle made baby’s latch worse and so stopped the bottle and just used the
cup).

I think Baby has limited tongue movement. I do not observe a tongue-tie,
but I’m unsure. Baby’s tongue *does* protrude past the gum line, but in my
inexperienced eye seems ‘limited’. Baby achieves a good seal with my
finger, but has a hard time with mom’s nipple.

Nipples are soft, and though not flat, tend *not* to become erect when
stimulated.

Anything jump out at you?

Blessings!
